An ADI check, or Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Standards Check, is a periodic assessment by the DVSA to ensure driving instructors continue to meet the required teaching standards. The test involves the examiner observing an instructor give a regular, 45-minute driving lesson to a pupil, during which the examiner evaluates the instructor’s lesson planning, risk management, and teaching abilities. At the end, the instructor receives a grade (A, B, or Fail) and feedback on their performance.
We will Mock Test you with a pupil of your choice in the same way an examiner will test you. The test is for 2 hours—the first hour with the pupil and the second hour with you alone. We will give you honest feedback on your performance. The cost is £90
What the check test involves
- Lesson planning: The instructor plans a lesson, and the examiner checks if it is appropriate and can be adapted.
- Risk management: The instructor must demonstrate they can manage the risk of the road and provide a safe learning environment for the pupil.
- Teaching and learning strategies: The instructor is assessed on their ability to teach effectively, provide feedback, and adapt their methods to the pupil’s needs.
- Overall performance: The examiner also looks at the instructor’s general manner, patience, and tact.
What happens after the check
- The instructor receives a grade based on their performance: A (43-51 points), B (31-42 points), or Fail (0-30 points).
- If an instructor fails, they can be removed from the ADI register if they do not book and take another check after further training.
- The check is a free, mandatory assessment that driving instructors must take, typically every 4 years.
